A Boccia Coach & Education Survey was circulated in Spring 2016 to all countries in membership of BISFed, 20 countries responded.  The audit was basic and was an attempt to discover the current global position of coach education and development.

In June 2016, a meeting of coaches was held in Povoa to initiate discussion regarding development at an international level and to feedback information from the survey. The key outcomes of the meeting were:

  • Feedback from the audit of coaching within BISFed member countries;
  • Initial consideration of a common terminology for international boccia;
  • Establish BISFed player and coach pathways.

In November 2016 a BISFed meeting was held of the board and relevant individuals. The meeting took place over two days and the following outcomes were produced:

  • Draft terminology;
  • Draft pathway;
  • Focus of the development committee should be coach education and development until 2020;
  • Timeline for delivery of the inaugural BISFed International Training the Trainers.

BISFed Development Committee

In August 2017, a BISFed Development Committee was selected following a nomination process amongst BISFed member nations.  The full Committee is:

  •  Chair: Heather Lowden
  • Vice Chair: Kenneth Soh
  • Committee Members: Mario Delisle, Anita Laszlo, Michaela Rihackova

The committee will conduct its business electronically and its terms of reference are available. The first meeting was held on 14 September 2017 where it was agreed that the committee’s focus would be coaching.  The next meeting was held in December 2017 at which guidelines for common global terminology and a coach pathway were produced and will be introduced at the Development meeting in August.  Further meetings have been held in January and May 2018 to plan and review the coaches course.

BISFed Level 1 Coach course – International Training the Trainers

A successful two day pilot coach level one course was held in Copenhagen on the 14th and 15th April            2018, made possible by a grant received from the IPC.

Twenty delegates attended the course – 12 from the Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland,  Iceland, Faroe Islands and 8 international delegates from Mexico, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Portugal and United Kingdom.  Trainers from member nations Canada, Scotland and the United Kingdom delivered the course from resources designed and developed in the United Kingdom and Canada.

It was an intensive and packed two days of activity, coaching practices and theory sessions.

All the candidates entered into pilot with great enthusiasm and provided excellent feedback which will add real value as the course is refined and developed to make it available to all member nations and regions.

BISFed Making Boccia Accessible – Instructors award and Level 1 Coach course 12 – 14 July 2018

BISFed International Development Meeting

It is proposed to hold an international development meeting on 14 August 2018 between 1930 and 2100 during the World Championships in Liverpool. It is an update and consultation meeting where we would like to hear your views on future developments in Boccia which would have the greatest impact on developing the sport globally.

Updates on:

  • common terminology,
  • the coaches pathway,
  • Making Boccia Accessible – Instructors Award,
  • BISFed Coaches Level 1,
  • Getting Boccia Started and Progressing.
